Can you take a vape on a plane?

Thursday, February 5, 2026

It would seem logical that if they sell cigarettes onboard a plane, that you are allowed to take your vape onboard as well, right? Let’s find out here!

Can I take a vape on a plane?

Short answer: yes. However, there are certain rules and restrictions that you should be aware of.

What type of vapes can I take on a plane?

All types of e-cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery devices can be brought onboard the plane. These include disposable vapes, liquid vapes, e-cigarettes, e-cigars, e-pipes, e-hookahs and any other electronic smoking devices. However, these must always be placed in your carry-on luggage. As these contain lithium batteries, all e-cigarettes and vapes (disposable, rechargeable, and liquid) are considered electronic devices, and the safety rules decree that these e-cigarettes cannot be placed in your checked luggage, as they are a fire hazard risk.

Can you take a liquid vape on a plane?

Yes, you can take a liquid vape on a plane, but it must follow the 100ml rule that all other liquids follow. You must also put this liquid vape in a sealed bag or container, as changes in pressure may cause leakage. It is recommended to empty your vape juice from your electronic device before boarding your plane, to avoid any risk of leakage or confiscation.

How much vape liquid can you take on a plane?

Vape liquid is considered (as the name suggests) a liquid. Therefore, it must adhere to all the rules concerning the 100ml liquid limit. All vape juice must be placed in a clear plastic 1L bag along with your other liquids.

Can you take a disposable vape on a plane?

Yes, you can also take a disposable vape on a plane. As with other types of vapes, it is considered an electronic device though, and must be treated as such when travelling. This means that you cannot put your disposable vape in your checked luggage, it must be carried in your hand luggage and stored either under the seat in front of you or in the cabin hold.

How many vapes can I take on a plane?

Most airlines allow between 15 and 20 electronic devices, but it varies per airline, so it is always advisable to check with your company. However, the general rule is that you could travel with around 20 devices that have lithium batteries. These devices must be safely sealed and stored in your luggage, to avoid any unnecessary accidents. It is also recommended to carry less than the permitted maximum, to avoid any conflict with airport security.

Do I need to put my vape in a clear bag?

It is not strictly necessary when travelling to put your vape in a clear, sealable bag. However, it is strongly recommended that you keep them in a leak-proof container, whether it be a bag, a small pouch, or a case.

When travelling with your vape, make sure that your device is completely switched off. As previously mentioned, it is recommended to empty your vape juice to avoid any leakage or confiscation. It is prohibited to smoke on the plane, so switching the device off would also reduce the temptation to reach for your vape during the flight. It is also prohibited on most airlines to charge your vape on the plane, so make sure that you have charged it before your flight.

Do I have to take my vape out during security?

Generally, yes, you will need to remove your vapes, batteries, and liquid from your bag and place them on the tray to be scanned. It is recommended to place your vape in a plastic, sealable bag, for easy access and analysis if needed. You must place your vape juice in your liquids bag alongside your other items. The rules have slowly been changing about taking out your liquids from your bag, but if you choose to travel with your vape juice, go to the airport with the mindset that you will need to take your bag out. Each airport is different, so it is always important to stay prepared.

What countries don’t allow vapes?

Different countries have varying laws on the subject of vapes. In general, disposable vapes are more commonly banned than reusable ones, specifically due to their unsustainable nature. However, there are also bans for possession of any variant of these items, whether disposable or not. Let’s take a closer look at the specifics

Here are some places where there are bans on vaping, including sale, import, manufacture, and for certain, public use.

Although these countries have strict bans on vaping, some countries have imposed regulations. For example, most European countries allow vaping (selling, distributing, consuming, importing, and more), but only for certain levels of nicotine contained in the cartridge (usually below 20mg/ml). They have also started to impose stricter regulations for nicotine products on the market.

Some of these regulations include:

  • Netherlands: only allowing tobacco-flavoured products, online sales banned, very strict indoor policies
  • Belgium, France, UK: total ban of disposable vapes
  • Denmark, Estonia, Finland: only tobacco and menthol flavours allowed

It is therefore important, if you do vape, to check the local regulations before you leave on your trip, as you may be faced with stricter rules than you are used to.
